Source: Dr Tobias BischofNiemz. When the question arises as to what South Africa's most abundant source of energy is, the usual answer is coal. South Africa has built almost its entire electricity system, as well as a good portion of its liquidfuels industry, on the back of its plentiful reserves of coal.

• Similar granitic source rocks in Eastern US (Appalachia) may have weathered to form REE enriched laterite deposits • Rozelle et al., 2016 reported highly exchangeable sources of REE from PA clay samples • Foley and Ayuso(2015) found REE enriched regolith (2900 ppm) weathered from the mildly peralkaline Robertson River batholith
In addition to coal gas and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), South Africa produced about 930 000 tonnes of natural gas and 104 860 tonnes of associated condensate in 2003. The entire gas and condensate output is dedied to PetroSA's liquidfuel synthesis plant, and accounts for about 1,5 percent of total primary energy supply. Gas manufactured ...
Coal use grew again in 2018. Global coal demand increased by %, continuing the rebound that began in 2017 after three years of decline. The main driver was coal power generation, which rose almost 2% in 2018 to reach an alltime high. Coal maintained its position as the largest source of electricity in the world with a 38% share.
· If the consumption rate continues to increase and no significant new sources are found, oil supplies may be exhausted in another 30 years or so. Despite its limited supply, oil is a relatively inexpensive fuel source. It is a preferred fuel source over coal. An equivalent amount of oil produces more kilowatts of energy than coal.
Coal fired. South Africa has rich coal deposits concentrated in the northeast of the country and as such the majority of South Africa's coalfired plants are loed in the Mpumalanga province. Around 77% of South Africa's energy needs are directly derived from coal and 81% of all coal consumed domestically goes towards electricity production.
· Highlights There are many coal deposits worldwide with high REY content (> %) in coal ashes. Some of coal deposits contain high REY (–14%) in host and basement rocks also. REY in highREY coals occur mainly as authigenic minerals and organic compounds. Coal deposits may be considered as new sources for REY recovery as a byproduct.
Coal mining in the Philippines has a long history dating back to the 1800s during the Spanish colonization of the Philippines consumes more coal than it can produce and coal is the main source of electricity. 20% of the country's coal supply is used by the cement industry (in 2005).
